Located on Monte Calvo, which offers a splendid view over the Gulf of Follonica, the medieval town of Gavorrano is plunged in the verdant Colline Metallifere (metal-producing hills), a major pyrite mining districts in Europe in early 20th century.
Today Gavorrano, which has invested consistently in tourism, is able to offer culture and entertainment by promoting former pyrite mines and the villages scattered in the area (Caldana, Giuncarico, Ravi) attracting thousands of visitors every year.
Just to mention a few sites well worth a visit: Museo del Parco Minerario Naturalistico, summer country festivals, a performance at the renowned open-air theatre carved into the rock, called Teatro delle Rocce. Both the medieval town of Gavorrano and the open-air theatre entertain tourists with a wide choice of concerts, cinema festivals and plays.
Silence and sunlight dominate the unspoiled Mediterranean scrub teeming with wildlife (boars, foxes, porcupines and birds of prey). On the surrounding hills olive groves and vineyards are grown, and the strada del vino (wine route) of Monteregio DOC Massa Marittima is just a few miles away.
Agriturismi and holiday apartments are the ideal accommodation for visitors who love history, gastronomy and wine culture.
