Once an island, the promontory of Monte Argentario is linked to the mainland by an accumulation of sand that is the isthmus of Orbetello; two other sandy bulwarks form the Tombolo della Giannella and Tombolo della Feniglia respectively to the north and to the south.
The two main towns are the lively harbours of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole with their attractive beaches and clear sea.
From the terraced hills cultivated with olive groves and vineyards you can enjoy a splendid view over Giglio and Giannutri islands and the coves with sandy or pebbly beaches. The two harbours promise relax, charm and entertainment with their elegant boutiques, a stroll along the beach or great coastal views from the Via Panoramica circular route.
They are also renowned for their bustling nightlife and water sports, like surf, scuba diving and sailing.
The four fortresses on the promontory, namely Fortezza Spagnola, Forte Filippo, La Rocca and Forte Stella, house interesting museums and exhibitions.
